On the front cover of my digipak I have chosen to use an image which is conventional to the indie genre. The image is of Ed walking into the sunset with his back turned on the front cover so that the audience don't see his full identity. I have done this so that is creates a sense of mystery and the audience would want to find out more about him. The location of the image is also conventional to the indie genre as the image is set in a field in sunset. Its conventional as the image is realistic and simple. The image is small of Ed, I've done this so that the audience understand that he is not constructed as a star as it shows he's not self centred and is a typical boy which the audience will be able to relate to. Iv'e chosen for the image of Ed to be holding a guitar on the front cover which clearly shows the album is in the indie genre and it also shows his musical talent. When I come to create the digipak the artist will be wearing typical indie clothing such as ragged edgy clothing and a hat also. This is so the audience will understand that the artist is of the indie genre. The colours I have chosen on the front are unconventional to the indie genre as they are bright colours such as green, yellow and blue however I have chosen these colours as they are visually appealing and will draw audiences in. It also shows the audience that the songs on the album are happy songs which will also draw them in. On the front cover I have chosen to put Ed Sheeran's name at the top of the digipak as it clearly shows the audience who the artist is which promotes him as a strong talented artist. I've chosen to put the image in the middle of the front cover so that the audience are drawn to it rather than the information, this is one benefit to a digipak as images draws audiences in. Ive also chosen to put special edition at the bottom, this makes the digipak look personal which is another difference between a jewel case and a digipak. Therefore the audience are more likely to buy the album. The font on the digipak is bold, I have chosen this as its conventional to the indie genre and is easier to read. The colour of the font is green which links with the colour scheme. I have also used a bolder font as its clear to read as our target audience is younger people. The bright colours connote to the artists personality as being happy and cheerful therefore the audience will be able to relate to this and would want to buy the album. The guitar connotes to his talent and shows the audience what type of genre he sings.
On the back cover there is no main image as I wanted to keep it simple which is conventional to the indie genre. I have chosen again to have a sunset on the back cover which links in with the colour scheme and the theme of him walking into the sunset. I have only chosen to use the sun as an image so it doesn't prevent the audience from reading the lyrics and understand what songs are on the album. The sun image connotes to the fact that he has found his light as an artist therefore suggesting that his album is successful. I have chosen again the same colour scheme as the front cover so that its the same colours used around all of the digipak which makes it visually appealing. This is another benefit to the digipak compated to the jewel CD case as the jewel CD case is quite plain compared to a digipak. The layout of the digipak is quite simple which is conventional to the indie genre. I have chosen to make the layout of the digipak simple on the back cover so that the songs on the album are easier to read. I have made it simple as my target audience is young 13-17 year old's therefore it will look visually better but also simpler to read. I have made the song names in a column as this is the typical way for back covers to look like and also spreads them out so the information is not too close together which would be harder for the audience to understand. The colours of the Song titles are all green which again links in with the colour scheme. It makes the back cover look bright and connotes to happiness. The back ground colour will be the colour of the sunset or blue which links with the colour scheme and makes it look bright also. I have done this so the digipak attracts the audience. I have chosen green as the color of the song titles so it contrasts from the blue and yellow therefore it stands out. The style of the font again is bold so that it stands out. By having bold font is conventional to the indie genre as its simple. I haven't decided to put an image of the artist on the back cover so that the song titles are easier to read but also to create a sense of mystery as the audience still don't see the artists full identity. Again the connotations of the bright colours suggest to the audience that the artist is happy which will build a relationship and make them buy his album.
On the CD I have chosen to use one image on the CD so that the CD is plain and simple which is conventional to the indie genre. The image is of a guitar and alcohol bottles. The guitar suggests to his audience his musical talent and emphasizes on what indie genre he sings. The alcohol bottles also suggest to the audience what his songs are about which will interest them when listening to the CD. They are both conventional to the indie genre. The colour that is used is blue. This links with the colour scheme around the digipak. I have chosen the colour blue as its unique and different but also connotes to happiness and what type of songs are on the album. The blue makes the disk visually appealing therefore the artist is more likely to listen to the CD and be interested in the artist. I have put Ed Sheerans name at the bottom of the CD so that it doesn't cover the image but also so the name stands out which will promote the artist as a strong powerful artist. The colour of Eds name is green which is also the same colour scheme used throughout. I have used the colour green as it also connotes to happiness. The image of the guitar and alcohol bottles are bigger than EDs name so that my artist doesn't come across as self centered. I have chosen to put the image above his name so that the audience will be interested in the meaning of the image. The font I have chosen to use is bold again which is the same font as the rest of the digipak as it stands out and is conventional to the indie genre. I have used a bold font so that his name stands out which promotes him as a strong artist.
On the inside cover i have made it personal which is another benefit to digipak compared to a jewel CD case as they do not have an inside cover. On the inside cover I am using a image which will be a close up portrait of Ed as portraits are more personal and the audience will be able to relate to him better which will build a relationship. The portrait will show his scruffy hair and a smile which will show he's a kind, caring person promoting him as a down to earth person which the audience can relate to. The portrait is also realistic which is conventional to the indie genre. The close up will emphasize his facial expression which will show he's a happy person due to his smile. The scruffy hair also relates to the indie genre as there seemed to be scruffy people which the audience will be to relate to. There will be barely any background colour due to the close up of Ed, but the background colour will be simple so that the image stands out. The font of the message to the fans will be in bold just on the side of the image, the message will stand out to the audience therefore they will take time to read it. The message will make the audiences feel special which will make them want to listen to the album and also buy other of his albums which is the main benefit of a digipak. The language i have used is simple so that it is easy to read. The only information on the CD cover is the message to fans so that the image is the main thing that stand out. On the other side of the inside cover is lyrics to 3 of his songs. This is another personal touch. It makes the audience feel again special and connected to the artist. I haven't used a image on this side of the inside cover as i want to lyrics to be easily read. The background colour is blue which links with the colour scheme and connotes to happiness which the songs are about. The font on the inside cover is bold so that it stands out and the audience can easily read it. I have set the lyrics out in columns so that its easy to read but also noticeable.
I have used the same colour scheme throughout the digipak so its visually appealing and draws peoples attention. I have also used the same font through out so it also looks appealing and so the font stands out. The representation of the artist is cheerful yet a mystery due to the small image of him on the front cover which doesn't show his true identity. I have chosen to do this so that the audience will want to find out more about the artist. The close up portrait of him makes him relatable as he looks like a typical boy which builds a relationship with him and the audience. The bright colours make him look like a cheerful person as the green and blue connote to happiness which makes the audience want to buy the album and are able to relate to him.
From planning my digipak on paper I feel more confident when I come to create it as i know understand what image I have to take and what features to add on my digipak.
You have provided an excellent analysis of your plan, explaining why you have chosen certain elements to use within your digipak and what you hope they will create for the audience.
ReplyDeleteYou need to:
1) Remember your artist name and album name will be different to the original artist - CHANGE THIS!
2) Include your picture of your drawing again
3) Elaborate on your conclusion by discussing how you know what you will need to include and where and how you have come up with a successful design etc.
